The traveler is a very particular kind of person, and so in turn can be difficult to shop for, especially the more nomadic sorts. There are some fail-safe routes you can pursue however.
As has been pointed out in many of the other articles something like a luggage seems largely unnecessary. If they were really traveling like they allegedly are, why in the hell do they need luggage?
A good idea for a travel enthusiast might be a custom photo album with photos taken from his journeys. How you will acquire them is the part you have to deal with not me. Try going to http://www.smilebooks.com/. There is a lot of features in terms of customization and stuff like that, you can put text and all that, y'know put in the location and all that shenanigans, maybe adjust the contrast and such to make the likely amateur photos look a little more professional.
Consider a McGuyver box of things relevant to their travels. Perhaps a way to entertain themselves on the plane, books on traveling and locations, such like that.
Depending on what kind of traveler they're will change the sorts of things you should get them. If they're more of a wild outdoors traveler things like a first-aid kit, binoculars, a pair of sunglasses or camping supplies of any sort might help. If they are the type to get a fancy hotel and just vacation for two weeks the sorts of things applicable to them are completely different.
If you have a bit of money to spend I don't think a GPS would ever go undesired. It could likely enhance just about any trip.
A good idea, although somewhat of a gamble, might be a diary. You really have to have an idea of the person you're shopping for and know whether they are actually going to use it or not.
I would like any other gift buying excursion avoid gift cards and money. Despite the obvious utility they truly come off as some of the most thoughtless gifts you could possibly think of. You might say 'well they need money'. Well, yeah, I need money too, so do you, so does my neighbor, and so does my cat. We all need money. Come up with something a little more thoughtful. Of course, certain scenarios perfectly warrant money, for example if your friend is in the midst of their travels, in a locale where they could make use of some extra cash.
These are really just a handful of ideas, there is a world of other things you can try.
