Getting ready for a hike

What better way is there to enjoy the great outdoors than on a hiking trip? Whether you go solo or with a few good buddies hiking is both refreshing and exciting. With some simple preparations and few necessary supplies you can turn a hiking trip into an adventure of a lifetime.

Safety always comes first.

Ensure that you are taking the proper safety precautions. If you have any medical conditions make sure that you have all of your needed supplies. Bring plenty of water and a first aid kit. They don't take up much room and if needed can be a life saver. Make sure that you let someone know where you are going and which trail(s) you plan on taking. If anything happens someone will at least know where you were headed.

Bring the proper gear.

No matter where you're hiking, make sure that you have the proper equipment for the terrain that you're in. One doesn't need wool socks in a swamp, but on a mountain they will keep your feet very cozy. Make sure you have a compass and a reliable way to start a campfire if needed. A tent or other type of shelter is also very handy on extended trips. Pack some food or a snack and if on extended trips canned foods are best but have a way to carry your trash until you can dispose of it properly. Make sure that you are able to carry what is needed without exhausting yourself.

Plan your route ahead of time.

Make sure that you are planning ahead on the trip. One shouldn't plan a trip into the Rocky Mountains in the middle of snow season. Get to know everything about the area as possible. Is there any wildlife that you should be concerned with? Is there a town/shelter nearby if a bad storm were to strike? Do you need any permits to hike or camp in this location?

Know your route.

If maps of your route are available make sure that you have one with you. If possible leave a copy with the person who knows where you're headed. Use the map as often as possible to ensure that you are still on the trail. They usually have landmarks or compass directions to help hikers find their way. In addition they can help you time how long it is to your next destination along the hike. Many maps have mileage or some sort of distance locations on them to help with this.

Hiking is an enjoyable activity for just about everyone. As long as you make the right preparations and bring the proper equipment it can be enjoyed by you as well.
