How to keep busy at work

by Laurie Childree

Created on: September 29, 2009

Keeping busy is something that helps to pass the time, especially when you're working. All to often during the day you find that you have time on your hands no matter what industry you work in. It doesn't matter if you're working at home or in a traditional workplace you have to stay busy in order to pass the time. So what are you going to do? There are a dozen things that you can do to keep yourself occupied.

There are some things that you should do to occupy yourself at work when you don't have anything to do. You shouldn't take a nap, make personal phone calls or simply lean against the wall. All of these things can lead to you joining the unemployed. You want to stay busy which means that even if something doesn't actually need doing you want to make it appear that it did.

Regular Responsibilities

The regular responsibilities of your job have to come first. You have to make sure that you do your normal task quickly and correctly. Suppose that part of your job is to mop the floor, you want to do a thorough job. This means that you have to take the time to ensure each corner and the areas under the furniture are all completely clean. When all of your responsibilities are done that leaves you with idle time that can get you in trouble if you aren't careful.

Extra Responsibilities

Doing extra jobs at work will help you to pass the time if you find you have free time while working. You can ask your supervisor for additional responsibilities if you are constantly finding that you have additional time during the work day. There might be additional cleaning or filing that can be done and has been being overlooked because your workplace is understaffed.
Assist Someone Else

When you finish your responsibilities you can help someone else complete their work. Just because you're done doesn't mean that everyone is. Keeping up with your work is good but if you can manage to help someone else finish their work that's even better.

Phone Calls

Don't make personal calls to stay busy, check and see if there are any business calls that you can make to help out. Answer the phones if they are ringing to help out. You can take messages, transfer calls or assist the person calling yourself.

Keeping yourself busy at work doesn't take a whole lot of thought. It just takes finding what needs to be done while you're at work.
