Music is a language unlike any other. Although it bears resemblance to other forms of communication, it is much more than just a way to get your point across. It has the power to build suspense, release tension, or soothe the savage beast. Music has the power to bring you to a better place mentally or make everything seem dark and bleak; whichever you choose, the power is all yours. Why learn to play music though? Why not just listen? I believe the shorter list of reasons would be why we shouldn't learn to play music, as I can not think of any.
I discovered music at a young age, both listening and playing. Playing an instrument is a great way to let out your emotions. When you start, of course you learn the basics of this language. This is done through the practice of making clear notes and eventually playing simple songs. As you progress though, you are able to express your own feelings and thoughts through your instrument. This is when things really get fun. To be able to write and play your own music, or pieces by artists you enjoy is simply one of the greatest feelings in the world.
As a parent wishing to interest your children in music, you need look no further than your children themselves. Chances are, they've already displayed interest in music. Whether by singing or banging pots and pans on the kitchen floor, this is their way of telling you they are ready. The look of joy on a child's face when they finally accomplish their first note on the guitar, or when they sing their first song is all the reward you'll ever need.
I recommend learning how to play an instrument to anyone and everyone I meet. Have you ever had something you've wanted to say, but couldn't find the words to say it? Maybe it's a great feeling of sadness, maybe it's feelings of love for the person of your dreams. Whatever the feeling, there is a way to express it through music. With so many different styles of music and the instruments they incorporate, there is a nich for everyone. You will never feel rejected by music. It will never pick you last for anything. It can be as beautiful or hostile as you want it to be.
The music industry is one of the biggest today, with artists at all levels. Even if your goal isn't super-stardom, there will always be a place for a musician. Whether it be a guitar around a campfire, a serenade to a lover, or quiet ambiance, someone's got to do it; and you can bet they are enjoying every minute of it.
Learning to play is definitely a life-altering experience.
