Poetry: Secrets

by Antony J Waller

I have a little secret I promised not to tell

Told me by a lady as she bid me fond farewell

She said I must keep it close and locked inside my heart

A message meant for me alone and not one to impart

She whispered it within my ear then sealed it with a kiss

And said that if I should forget it life could become remiss

So I took a vow, swore an vow and kept my fingers crossed

Promised myself most faithfully the secret would not be lost

But as she took her leave of me and waved a sweet goodbye

I felt a lump rise in my throat and tears well in my eye

Yes, I kept that secret safe but I think it's time to tell

Although I have known for ages and it's served me very well

This mystery, the enigmatic treasure that's far beyond compare

Is nothing I could search for, for  it's already there

The answer to my happiness, this secret in my life

It's she who stands beside me, my dear and darling wife
