Heaven. Golden streets that echo with the songs of saints and angels. The throne room of the universe. The dwelling place of the most high God. As we contemplate life and its conclusion, many seek comfort in the idea that everyone goes to Heaven when they die. Modern society is permeated with the idea that it doesn't matter what path you took in life. Live as you want here for all roads lead to Heaven. But do they? God, the creator and ruler of Heaven, says no.
Through the pages of Scripture we see God has much to say about the way to Heaven. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addressed this topic.. He calls all people to "Enter in at the straight gate" (Matthew 7:13), saying the way to "destruction" (Hell) is wide and many go that way; but the way to "life" (Heaven) is narrow and few find it. We are all on a path, but the way to Heaven is the straight and narrow. This is no cause for despair though. The way may be straight and few may find it, but that is not because it is hidden. In John 14:6, Jesus tells us that He is "The way" and "no man comes to the Father but by Me (Jesus)" Anyone who comes to Jesus finds the way.
Heaven is a place of perfection, God's perfection. People sin. Sometime in every person's life they do wrong. They might steal, kill, commit adultery... In all fairness, there are some who have avoided these sins. But even these have fallen at one point or another into the sin of lying. Whether it is a great big black hole of a lie or just a little white lie, a lie is a lie. Lying is a sin. God can't allow sin to stand before His perfection. So through our own merit none of us could get to Heaven.
But God, who is perfect, made the perfect sacrifice for our sin. God sent His Son to save the world. Jesus came to earth, lived a perfect life, and died to fill the sentence God placed on our sin. Since Jesus paid the penalty, He gave us a way to Heaven. Without Jesus, we are still sinners with a judgment pronounced on our sin. We still cannot come before God's perfection. We cannot come into His Heaven. Jesus gave us the way. He is the ONLY way.
