How to prevent your dog from getting cancer

Cancer can grow in any dog. It is almost always fatal, as there is no known cure. We can treat the symptoms, remove any tumors, but at the end of the day all an owner can really do is hope. Owners of dogs are always looking for ways to prevent their dogs from becoming ill and whilst there is no true way to prevent your dog from getting cancer, it is possible to limit the risks greatly.

Spaying and Neutering

Removing the organs affected is the best way to remove the risk of cancer. By spaying bitches and neutering dogs you do remove the risk of ovarian cancer in bitches and testicular cancer in dogs. By spaying and neutering, you also reduce the risk of mammary tumors growing. Unfortunately neutering does sometime increase the risk of prostate cancer in dogs, but there are other ways to reduce the risks of cancer in your beloved pet.

Diet

Whilst it is not yet scientifically proven, it is thought that natural anti-oxidant rich foods will help to reduce the risk of cancer. Using a food that sources natural and organic ingredients rather than one filled with artificial chemicals may help to limit the chances of cancerous cells growing. Find a feed that is specially designed towards the breed, age and health of your dog to keep them in tip-top condition.

Exercise

Obese dogs are more likely to get cancer than healthier ones. Alongside a healthy and well-balanced diet, plenty of exercise is vital to keeping your dog fit and healthy. Exercise will also help to keep your dogs heart and lungs healthy. Maintaining your dog's vitality and healthy will aid their circulation and immune system, helping to fight off any diseases or infections.

Health Checks

Regular vaccinations and parasite treatments will also help to keep your dog healthy, and whilst not a cancer prevention in their own right, regular trip to the vet will help to keep an eye on any lumps that may become a problem. If lumps and bumps can be removed early enough, it stops the chances of malignant tumors developing and spreading.

Protection

Skin cancer can occur in dogs just as it can in humans. By protecting your dog's skin against the sun's rays you are reducing the risk of skin tumors growing. Clothing and baby sun screen can be used on hairless breeds or those with conditions such as alopecia. You can also buy special 'doggy-clothing' that is ideal from guarding them against UVA rays.

Generally healthy dogs are less likely from contracting cancer than otherwise unhealthy ones. Cancer is not age or breed specific, but is more likely to occur in older dogs. If you keep your dog well cared for in their younger years, you are setting them up for a long and enjoyable life.
