Why so many marriages end in divorce

by Mutters

My marriage ended in divorce. The reasons are many and varied but essentially we as a couple didn't gel. We didn't have enough in common. I'm not really that fussed to be honest; we remain friends and I think that will be more successful a relationship than the marriage.
My parents recently celebrated their 40th anniversary and from a child's memory it wasn't all plain sailing but they stuck it out. That's how it was in their generation - problems were worked out. On the surface, it seems that in today's world, people just aren't prepared to put the effort in.

However, when considered, why should two people who clearly aren't meant to be together put themselves through misery just so they can stay married. Being officially married and wearing a ring really means nothing nowdays. In the past it was to signify that the person was 'taken'; a warning to potential suitors that the subject of their affections is 'of the market'. Of course, those were the days when love meant something. when honesty, loyalty and trust were values embraced.
In our modern world, love rarely enters into it. What appears to be more important is security, mainly financial. "Gotta have a J. O. B. if you wanna be with me'. Isn't that how the song goes?
Big house, nice car, well paid job; these are the things that matter. As a concept the term 'love' is thrown around with virtually no meaning. For me, ultimately, love is the willingness to lay down one's life for another.
As a society we appear to be fragmenting and the result is that no-one really puts any thought past the immediate future, into a given relationship. They just go for the immediate pleasure. Then wonder why they feel different later down the line and just leave.
Unfortunately it's the children who take the brunt of marriage break-ups; left in a one-parent family, run from pillar to post as the parents separate.
I don't have any (more design than accident) so that's not something I need to worry about.
Sign of the times, I'm afraid. All we really can do is remain true to ourselves and hope we are lucky enough to find true love before we die.
