So you're fed up with working for somebody and you're dead set on carving a business of your own? This is a very challenging adventure, one that will require your full dedication, determination, time, talent, and money.
For starters, you have to make sure that you have enough money in the bank. You should have enough to last you at least six months without earning anything. If you don't take care of this matter, you can be homeless by the time your own business starts earning.
Next, you have to think of a good business, not one that will be too complicated or hard to manage. You have to ask yourself: What makes you tick? What do you do best? What is something that you can do for hours, days, or weeks without getting fed up or tired of it? If you cannot answer any of these questions, then you're not yet ready to set up your own business.
The mechanics of setting up your business is by far the easiest, such as thinking of a fancy company name, or registering your business, even the task of generating an invoice. In this day and age, you can do all of this in one day. For example, invoicing your clients and getting paid can easily be managed by PayPal, all you have to do is set up what is called a premier account.
You also have to develop a feasibility plan for your business, one that is practical, truthful, and to the point. Don't sugarcoat it with your daydreams, rather face all the poignant questions by turning yourself into your own devil's advocate. The plan does not have to be filled with senseless, high-fallutin' details. So long as you are factual and truthful with your marketing analysis, you should be on the right track.
Finally, you should set up the logistics requirements of your newfound business. It can be as simple as a computer table, a laptop, a telephone line, and a reliable Internet connection.
Having done all of the above, now you are ready to make your first call, or your first email to a prospect or would-be client. Just keep going, taking it one customer at a time, and never look back! For if you do, it will surely feel like you're on top of Mount Everest looking down. Thus you can easily back out of your plans and give up on the entire adventure. And when that happens, what a waste!
