The candidates for the Class of 2010 have just been announced for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There are many good acts here but only five of the twelve candidates can get into the Hall. So, who should be in the Hall?
Of the candidates of the Class of 2010 Genesis is the best choice to put into the Hall of Fame. Genesis was one of the first truly successful progressive rock acts of the 1970s and even after Peter Gabriel left the band the group never fully abandoned its roots when it went to a mainstream approach in the 1980s. Not only would voting this band into the Hall of Fame being a salute to the band's influence but it just might open the door for other progressive rock acts that have yet to get in including Yes and King Crimson.
While it is true that ABBA is not necessarily rock and roll the band has made a massive influence on rock music. The band's pop songs have remained earworms to this day and have even influenced a successful stage musical that spawned a movie. It only makes sense to bring ABBA into the Hall of Fame.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are first time candidates this year. It is amazing that the band has been around for as long as it has been. The band has consistently reinvented itself many times and even the band's new music sounds unique and sweet to the touch. The fact that the band made one of the most influential alternative rock albums of all time in 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' helps too. This band should not have to wait too long to get into the Hall.
I admit that I am not a fan of Kiss but the band has made a huge impact on rock music. The band helped to make the live album popular with its 'Kiss Alive' album and the band has found a variety of new ways to get people to keep in touch with them including a recent promotion that involved allowing the fans to set up the band's recent tour schedule. Kiss should be voted in.
The last of the five candidates who should get in with the Class of 2010 is a completely different figure from others on the ballot in Darlene Love. Love's vocals were memorable in many early-1960s hits including 'He's a Rebel' and the sounds of her songs were vital in that they showcased Phil Spector's production technologies.
As for the other candidates, they will have to wait a little longer. The Hollies were memorable, Laura Nyro wrote all sorts of songs that were made great by groups like the Fifth Dimension and Blood Sweat and Tears and Jimmy Cliff was one of the best reggae stars in history. However they may need to wait until next year or even later.
