Look, we can go on about how much we need to do to change things til' we're blue in the face. The simple fact is that we as humans have never conformed or assimilated with nature. Our supreme intelligence when compared with the 'dumb animals' drives us to attempt to manipulate and exploit nature to suit our own ends regardless of the effect it may have on every other living thing.
Mother nature is the perfect organism and she regulates her inhabitants with a skill unmatched by any human. For example - if ever there was a species that became ubiquitous to the detriment of it's environment and other species, she would step in and cull it back to a sustainable level and things would return to normal. We have seen many examples of this.
But we in our infinite wisdom decide that we're not going to be held to the same laws and ignore her warning signs secure in the knowledge that we can still circumvent the effects of our pollution (whilst land clearing to the 'nth degree in the name of our dark master - the dollar). Richard Branson has offered a large sum of money to the first person who can develop a way of removing the excess CO2 from the atmosphere. Hang on - isn't that what trees do? Oh that's right, we've ripped them out of the ground to...see 'dark master'.
Well, despite what Mr Gore tells us (as he soars his way around the globe using the most pollutive method of transport ever invented), we can't. The nature of man won't permit the kind of change required to return the planet to it's former glory. Such a change would include the abolition of the internal combustion engine (according to UN reports) and in my humble opinion, a cull of the human race to at least half its present size (and that's conservative). Might even be time for a Noah's Ark type return.
It boils down to 2 simple figures. 1/ number of births per annum. 2/ number of deaths per annum. If the latter remains more than the former, then it's inevitable that it will reach the stage when nature steps in to redress the balance. We are seeing this today. Not so 'supremely intelligent' now, huh?
Maybe we'll get lucky and discover another Earth-like planet where we can start the rot all over again. Cause we will - cause it's the nature of man. Get used to it, it's what we are! More's the pity!
