Dating someone from a different culture can be quite exciting. For those who are adventurous and feel that they are not the stereotypical person of their own culture, dating someone of another culture is quite alluring. Certainly, some people date inter-culturally because they want to exploit a specific cultural stereotype. A man might want to date a Japanese woman because they have heard that Asian women are submissive. A woman might want to date a south American stud because they have heard of their sexual prowess. These relationships are doomed to fail. These people are not looking for a mate, they are looking for a stereotype. This is a selfish way of getting a specific need met and rarely, if at all, yields happiness for the couple.
When dating someone of a different culture, one must admit that conversation is a strong point. Of course, language and communication styles are different. However, the topics of conversation have just expanded and both of you are engaging in a new and wonderful experience. This is what fuels the excitement. Everyone enjoys the fact that someone is interested in them and their interests, etc. There is a high desire to learn about the other person and their culture. This fuels the fascination of the daters.
Even if both people speak the dominant language perfectly, misunderstandings occur when body language and tone is perceived differently. As the dating continues, the parties involved will want to be more open and honest about their thoughts, feelings and expectations. It is important to know that polite behavior, respect and displaying discomfort varies from culture to culture. Some people do not respond positively to direct questions. Thus, it is important to proceed slowly.
The first few dates can be fun hobby sharing experiences. One way to share your culture is to eat at a typical restaurant that embodies your culture. Of course, be observant of food restrictions of your date. Yet, attempt to show them an enjoyable eating experience. You could also take them to a cultural sporting event, a movie discussing your culture or even a cultural concert.
Dating is the time to discuss specific values, hobbies, childhood and enjoy all of those differences. Of course, take note of these differences and analyze them for any negative backlash. For example: you might respect and even admire the way that your date clings to his/her family. But, that trait might not be so appealing when you feel that you are always taking a backseat
