Thirteen Steps
Thirteen steps between us
I climbed,
And you looked at me
Silver and black, concrete blonde
Your dragon eyes glittered
With mischief. Keen edged and roguish
Is your ardor, an ancient warmth.
'I know you' you said, 'I've known you'
And we laughed like jade striking jade, ringing
Echoing through alleys, smiling
Our secret smiles.
I called you lover once
And again.
Through time, over ages, across cobblestoned graves
Ours and others, I have loved you.
Cathedrals, stolen and eroded, crumble into time.
Still I whisper 'lover' with the breath I am given.
The union, the reunion leaps
From the past, toys with us, tempts us
Savoring delight, I taste you
Again for the first time
Thirteen steps behind me
I look back at you.
