Gaining voluntary work experience - besides its intrinsic value - is a great way to help you secure paid work in the future. Examples of ways in which to gain volunteer work are:
1. Volunteer organisations. There may be a "Voluntary Action" group in your area which can help you gain voluntary work. This can involve anything from driving a mini-bus for the elderly to working on landscaping projects.
2. Go with your interests. If you are interested in adult literacy teaching, then contact your local local authority and ask to speak to the Adult Education Dept. If your interest is in environmental issues, then contact local groups to see what they are involved.
3. There are many other obvious places where you ask for information. There is usually at least one charity shop in every town; churches are usually involved in charity work, etc.
4. Approach companies directly. Voluntary work does not have to be community-orientated. If you wish to work in journalism, contact the nearest, small-town newspaper and ask if you can contribute articles on such-and-such a topic.
5. Become more involved in your hobby. If you like soccer, you may find that your local club runs coaching sessions for children etc.
