Recently I had a friend ask me why I was not already starting to stress over the upcoming holiday season.
I knew that I was excited about the holidays, and I could tell her exactly why I felt enthusiastic. The truth is, though, that I couldn't answer her original question; I couldn't pinpoint exactly why I was not stressing out over the holiday season.
So, I sat down and started thinking about why the beauty of the holiday season leaves me joyous rather than burnt out and exhausted.
1. Natural beauty.
The autumn and winter months are my favorite time of year. Taking a walk in the crisp air, watching brightly colored leaves swirl in the wind, or relaxing by a fire are just a few of the things I look forward to during the cooler months. What a blessing that the holiday season happens to fall within this gorgeous time frame. It is difficult to feel stressed as you see a tapestry of natural color on the trees, or you see the reflection of Christmas lights twinkling in the wet streets.
True, sometimes amidst the hustle and bustle of last minute shopping, family drama, or too many parties it is easy to lose sight of the wonder of the holiday season. That is why this year you should try something different to make your holiday season more fun and less stressful.
Shop early, or online, and avoid the last minute crowds of panicked shoppers.
If family drama is getting you down, opt out of some of the gatherings, and stay out of things that don't concern you. Uncle Milton can freak out about your cousin Ida without your help this year. Do what you can to ignore the negativity and you will feel much happier and much less stressed.
Say "yes" to fewer parties and other social obligations. Whether for friends, family, or work, you do not need to attend every holiday party. It is a busy time of year, and no one should expect you to be at every event. Take back some of your time and enjoy the holidays in your own way.
2. Joy of giving.
Remember back when you were a kid? The thrill of putting together the perfect handmade pinch pot or finishing your very best drawing? Remember how excited you were about your friends and family members opening your gifts?
Just because you're no longer a kid doesn't mean that you can't have that same level of excitement when you give someone a present.
Whether handmade or store bought, taking the time to find the perfect gift, and seeing the look on someone's face as they unwrap it, is one of the greatest joys of the holiday season.
