Washington State, the heart of the Pacific Northwest is full of fun-filled family experiences and amazing destinations. It is a very versatile place offering something for everyone, and much more than most of us can cram into a single vacation. Five of the best family oriented destinations are outlined below.

Seattle

Seattle is one of the most family friendly cities anywhere. Transport is plentiful and many attractions are all grouped together making it easier on short legs. The Pacific Science Centre is a wonderful place for kids. It is filled with interactive displays that are both fun and educational. It is located near the Space Needle which is an incredible experience for kids. Even if they don't find the view impressive, they will spend hours playing in the fountain or building the Lego replica, and find the atmosphere to be very clean and friendly.

Baseball games, whale watching and tours of the Puget Sound, the zoo, and Pike Place Market. Don't forget Scratch Patch. This is a kids play place based on a South African idea where kids are allowed to dig and play in a giant "sandbox" full of gemstones. They are encouraged to learn the different kinds, and will spend hours looking for their favorite stones. It is different, and economical.

Westport

If you are after a beach holiday, then Westport is a favorite. While it must be said that Northwest beaches are notoriously cold, there is still plenty to do and the quaint town of Westport has it all. Located close to clamming beaches, this is a great activity for families (you have to have a license and must only go clamming on certain tides, be sure and confirm dates). There is lots of fishing and boating available as well.

This beach abounds with driftwood, shells and sand dollars ready for the collecting. It is also worth getting a kite, and there are a few specialized kite shops that cater to both novice and stunt flyers alike.

If outdoor activities aren't your favorite there are quaint gift shops and art galleries, and of course there is the candy shop. You'll find an abundance of Old-fashioned salt water taffy in every imaginable flavor, candied apples and handmade chocolates. Relive the simple pleasures of a by-gone era with your kids. You might be surprised how much they enjoy it.

Great Wolf Lodge
