The impact of delayed fatherhood on child-father relationship

by Rachelle de Bretagne

Although there are arguments for and against delayed fatherhood, the stronger arguments are in favor of it. The impact which delayed fatherhood has on a child-father relationship is much more profound for very good reason. Psychologically, a father who is older, will also be more open minded and prioritize the relationship over other aspects of their lives. Younger men still have their own lives to live and are often focused on career, finance, housing and other essential elements of marriage which are equally as important, though which put fatherhood on the back shelf through necessity.

*Growing up.

*Learning and spending quality time together.

*Knowing where the relationship is heading.

*Giving advice to a child based on experience.

*Understanding a child's mentality.

*Having the experience to deal with day to day issues.

Growing up.

While it is often said that young fathers grow up with their children and become their friends, an older father can form relationships with their child based on experience. Some argue that an older father may be set in their ways, though this acts as a stable base for fatherhood, and often the child father relationship works both ways. The young child is able to help the adult to keep life in perspective and to have up-to-date ideas about what is going on in the world, and the child of an older father knows that they can depend upon their father's experience to guide them.

Learning and spending quality time together.

An older father has lived longer. As a lifetime passes, patience grows. Priorities are different. The older father with thrill at spending time with a child. The reason for this is that they are aware of the passing of time. The child will have been born out of choice and the older father's pride at sharing with their son or daughter will be more developed.

Whereas a younger father has the priorities of providing the family with sufficient income, and has to divide their lives between career and family, an older father is better prepared and will be able to give a child more attention, simply because they know where their career is going, and will be more settled in their work life, and be able to mold this around family needs, instead of molding family needs around their career.

Knowing where the relationship is heading.

A child of an older parent will know their father's moods. They will also know that their habits are not something which are easily changeable. A younger man may not have found direction
