Many people worry over why their dog has a dry nose. In most cases, there is nothing to worry about. Just like humans, dogs can have dry skin, too. Oftentimes, dry noses can be contributed to the weather conditions, over exposure to the sun, or a genetic disposition. In some cases, when there is scaling, changes in pigmentation, and other areas of dry skin, a skin disorder may be the cause. In this case, you should take your pet to the veterinarian for a check up.
Shampoos can cause skin dryness in a pet. Simply change shampoos and try a milder one. Smaller breeds are more susceptible to allergies and skin allergies. Your veterinary should carry shampoo's which are gentler for your dog's condition. They may even carry a conditioner to treat for dry skin. Oatmeal shampoo's are usually good for the skin. There are a multitude of shampoos and conditioners out on the market today. It is not advisable to use shampoo meant for human use, because these are too strong and can aggravate skin conditions on your pet. Don't be afraid to ask your veterinarian which shampoo and conditioner would be best for your breed of dog.
Weather can be a contributing factor in dry noses. Humidity is often the likely culprit. If your dog is an outside dog, make sure they have proper shading and plenty of fresh water. You may apply a smidgen of children's sun block on their noses, especially with those pets with a lighter color nose.
Dogs also love to dig in the dirt which can make their noses appear dry. There is nothing wrong with dry noses. If you are overly concerned, then apply some petroleum jelly to it. This is the overall best remedy for dry noses!
Genetic disposition may be another reason your breed of dog has a continuous dry nose. The same applies here, dab a drop of Vaseline onto their noses.
There are all sorts of wives' tales told about dry noses on dogs, but frankly, they are untrue. It is a common occurrence and in no way indicates your dog is in an unhealthy state. If there are other symptoms which occur simultaneously, such as the ones listed above, then you may have reason to be concerned. Skin disorders can be caused by a number of factors. Most are treatable.
A visit to the veterinarian can help you solve your problem and ease your mind.
