"Absolute Power corrupts absolutely." I have never seen another quotation that is more relevant concerning the morals of current politicians. What amazes me is the voters keep on returning these weasels back to office. It doesn't take much research to find examples of immorality in Washington. For example, former President Bill Clinton is a prime example where up until the point he was confronted with Monica Lewinsky's dress stained with his semen, did he back down and admit he did engage in sexual misconduct but still affirmed he did not have sex with her. The late Senator Ted Kennedy is being hailed as a Saint and the Liberal Lion but what about his conduct in allowing Mary Jo Kopechne to drown in his car that went off the bridge into the Poucha Pond and didn't bother to report the incident till the next day when Ms. Kopechne's body was discovered in the car. Finally former Senator John Edwards has the audacity to cheat on his wife whose dying of cancer.
In all three cases, in my opinion the morality of these gentlemen are definitely decayed or possibly non-existant. The sad part is only when confronted with clear evidence did all three finally admit they had been guilty of wrong doing. What is disturbing is it is not only Democrats but Republicans as well. How about Republican Governor Mark Sanford who disappears without a word to anyone to rendezvous with his Argentina mistress? By not informing his own staff where he was going and why, in addition to being immoral, he put his constituents in a legal limbo. If any emergency had occurred in his absence, until it could confirmed that he was unable to fulfill his duties, the Lt. Governor was powerless to act. In my opinion, he should step down because it's a clear violation of neglecting his responsibilities. But, he won't and is sitll engaging in a war of words to keep his job. If I were in his shoes, I would just apologize and step down.
It seems once individuals get any semblance of power there is an almost irresistible impulse to abuse it. Either for personal gain or to reward friends and/or relatives. This is a sad state of affairs that will continue until the majority of voters proclaim "Enough is Enough" and not re-elect these individuals that clearly show they can't be trusted. Once this is done, don't buy their autobiography, pay to see a movie of their life or patronize them in any way.
Like my kids, when they did something wrong, they were punished so they didn't do it again. Until immoral politicians are held accountable for their actions and made to make amends, nothing will change. And like my kids will continue to do the wrong thing because it's "fun". The people need to wake up and start holding their representatives responsible. Like a friend of mine once observed, "America, founded by geniuses...run by idiots."
