I will not tell you that studying hard all night long, ignoring fun, and getting "in good"y with professors is the way to succeed in college. What I will say is this: Use your liberty and ability to make wise choices while you are in college, because these are the years you will find out more about yourself and others. In the meantime here are some tips I've kept on my journey through college.
Break out of the box
I was the shy student, and still am. Ultimately, I learned that college is a nesting ground for connections. Many students may be in your field of study or maybe not, the goal is to not remain so antisocial. There are so many community organizations and clubs to join, and people who have the same hopes and fears that you do. It is great knowing you aren't alone. To this day, I have connections with a few students who are successful in their own way and even being chatty (not licking the books) with the professors is not such a bad idea either, because they helped me with jobs and internships. This brings me to my next tip.
Don't play ghost
In order to be a success, showing up regularly to class is a must-no mysterious disappearing . This may seem obvious but trust me, when I began college that first semester it was all about me hanging out and meeting new friends. This caused me to slack in some classes, and it made a few professors look at me as if I didn't care. I pulled myself up quickly before the end of the year and proved to the old and new instructors that I cared about my destiny. A few of them I still contact from time to time and they help me with finding resources and encouragement. Playing ghost had to stop at some point.
Work hard to play your hardest
One can not mention success in college without at least touching on study habits. Again, having liberty means being able to freely choose what to do. This means Monday through Friday or whenever you have your classes, those days should be reserved for studies first. Granted, some people actually work or are interns while in college, so you want to squeeze in some moments for completing assignments. Then on the weekends, or in the evening you will have time for yourself. What I did was start on my work the day it was assigned. Yes, I worked in the daytime. This meant once I got home, I got started on research, reports, or whatever else needed to be done. Every weekend belonged to me.
These are by no means the only tips to live by, and they certainly aren't written in stone, but they kept me in line while in school and besides you want to make this your best time in life!
