Letter from the Front, Orange County
My neighbor's wife is pregnant,
she miscarried years ago, so this child
is redemption. We've fixed our opinions
on abortion, everyone's pro family,
Republican, with a dash of Taoism
tossed in for balance. We're convinced
our lives will end without trauma,
perhaps comatose in bran flakes
during breakfast, though no one actually
expects to die. Reverend Warren claims
life everlasting is the price of victory.
A dozen wars have brought us here,
streets wide and curbed, cracker-jack
straight with cul-de-sacs, no dead ends.
Dark house paints are discouraged,
off-white preferred like our teeth.
The moon rides high and bright in
evening skies, stumped at our rampant
disinterest, but relentless. We're still
breathing and we vacation in Cabo.
