Senior housing or retirement housing is a residential housing estate for the elderly who are over 55 years old and who have retired from work. Most of these estates offer assisted living and encourages social interaction among the inmates. Senior housing is an age-restricted apartment community housing developed for older adults who are able to care for themselves. The residents opted for this type of housing because they do not want to bother theimselves with property maintenence problems due to their ages. They also want to bother less about their laundry and stay in a lively environment unlike the isolated houses they were staying. These people requires the best as they live on their hard-earned pension or government assistance.

The basic principles behind senior housing are: provision of comfortable and affordable residential housing for the retirees, provision of good health facilities for in-mates, encouragement of social interactions among retirees to foster good health, provision of security of life and properties of retirees, provision of manageable properties for retirees who are living alone without house-helps. The size of the rooms which should be enough to allow manouvre of the residents and not "shoddy-box" which is only big enough for birds, is important.
