Has Joe Wilson's outburst hurt the GOP?

by Joe Gonzalez

Created on: September 24, 2009

Joe Wilson's outburst will not hurt the Grand Old Party any more than it already is! The Republican politician called President Obama a liar as he spoke before Congress and the nation. The result of the outburst was more than a slap in the face of the Republican Party. It was not a self-inflicted wound with a weapon.

The battle for the Republican Party is raging. Will it become a party of nasty, rude, and stubborn politicians who rely on fear to take and control power? Will they become less inclusive and endanger their chances of enticing membership from minorities? These questions must be answered.

Right-wing radio talk show hosts want the GOP to remain fundamentally militantly ultra-conservative. Damn the torpedoes. The ship must sail. If it sinks it sinks. The captains will go down with the ship! The problem is that many right-wing radio talk show hosts spread fear, anger, and in some cases racism! They deny they do. Baloney, they add fuel to the fires. That is at a "minimum."

There is nothing wrong with standing up for your political views. One must use civility and compromise. This is a part of democracy. Otherwise, it becomes something other than that form of government.

Joe Wilson is an example of what the Republican Party has become. Segments of the party cling to the old days.

Moderates in the party can save it from extinction or political ineptness. Look to the likes of Senator John McCain. McCain comes from Arizona that has a huge Hispanic population. He has a good track record with this community. Conservative philosophy are part of the Hispanic fabric. Family is very important. Patriotism is also a value near and dear to Hispanics. This ethnic group believes in liberal policies when it involves healthcare and programs that aid the poor. You can believe in your values and have a kind heart.

Immigration will define inroads or lack of them in the Republican Party's bid to succeed in the minority electoral gains.

Healthcare reform will also make or break the party. There is no turning back once they choose their tactics.

Look what happened with the confirmation process of Judge Sotomayor. Every action has a consequence. Perception is one thing.

The reality of actions is what it is!

The Republican Party is already wounded. Joe Wilson slapped it in the face and made the party look foolish.

Credit should be given to GOP members who rightfully called Joe Wilson to task. Manners, manners, manners.
