Do your students know about the different time zones of the world? If not, you may be surprised at how easy it can be to teach them about the time zones just by using your bulletin board. This article will show you how to make the most use out of your bulletin board so that you can easily and effectively use it to teach your students about time zones.
Time zones deal with time, so there is no easier way to teach time than by using a clock. Before you can even begin this activity, you must divide your students into groups. You have to determine how many time zones you are going to include on the bulletin board. However, it is always helpful to start with Greenwich Mean Time and go to the western and to the eastern hemispheres from there. Once you have divided your class into smaller groups and have given each group a time to work on, you can begin telling them how to create their components for the bulletin board.
Each group will make a paper clock that depicts a time zone's time when the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is at 12:00 PM (or AM). So, if it is 12:00 PM GMT, to find Pacific Time in the United States, you would subtract 7 hours, which means it is 5:00 AM PT. A good resource to use is this website, which tells all of the time zones based on the GMT. So, you have to give the GMT time zone first to a group. Once that group has completed its clock, the other groups can start with their clocks. Give them guidelines (i.e., how many hours to add or to subtract from the GMT).
Once all of the clocks are finished, you can then ask your students to glue them onto bright construction paper and cut the construction paper into a circle, leaving 1" extra as a border. Place the GMT clock in the middle of the bulletin board. Place the North American time zones to the left of the GMT clock, and place the European and Asian time zone clocks to the right of the GMT clock.
When the bulletin board is finished, explain to your class the importance of learning about the different time zones.
As you can see, teaching your students about the time zones is easier when you have a bulletin board to help you.
