Bulgaria is a member of the European Union (EU). As such, its immigration policy towards foreign citizens is in compliance with EU regulations. If you would like to work in Bulgaria, there are certain things you should know.
You are considered a foreigner if you are not a citizen of any of the member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation. As a foreign citizen you need to obtain a work permit. You may obtain a work permit based on an employment contract, or a business trip to undertake business activities.
There are many opportunities available for foreign citizens in Bulgaria. There are summer jobs available at summer resorts on the Black Sea Coast, and there are winter ski jobs available at Bulgaria's winter ski resorts. The English language is in increasing demand internationally; and in Sofia in Bulgaria, English teachers can secure good opportunities to teach English as a foreign language in local and international schools. TEFL International offers many opportunities to teach English in Bulgaria.
There are many foreign business companies which seek international staff with special qualifications and fluency in English. In and around Sofia, you find a number of estate agencies, as well as property construction and development agencies, continually growing and in need of English speaking staff who can liaise with international property buyers and investors. There are also many of these opportunities along the coastal regions and some in the main ski resorts of Bulgaria.
It is a good idea to travel to the country and get a feel for it if you're thinking of working there. While you are on that visit, you can start networking. That would make it easier for you to find employment when you get your work permit and are actually present there to work. You can also do volunteer work. You can then submit your resume to prospective employers. You can also find work by word of mouth or look in the English language newspapers. You can also find jobs on the internet.
Your opportunities could improve if you try to learn one of the languages spoken in Bulagaria: Bulgarian, Turkish or Roma. The minimum age for working in Bulgaria is 16. There is part time and full time work. Full time work encompasses a 40 hour, 5 day week. The locals are quite hospitable; and living and working in Bulgaria also entails good entertainment, fine dining at some top class restaurants. You can also good summer and winter sports.
