Curls come in different shapes and sizes with a personality all of their own. Bouncy spiral ringlets tend to be cute and flirty, while larger curls with volume can take on a seductive quality. However, these curly styles rarely happen naturally, even for those with curly hair. Curls that have shape and definition are usually set and defined into a style. One gentle way to achieve long lasting curls is via the wet set. There are different methods of wet setting besides using rollers. This guide will walk you through the traditional wet set and also show you two different ways to wet set your hair.
Preparing for the Wet Set
Wet setting can be achieved by simply rolling the hair while damp without applying any styling product to it. If you have normal hair that is well moisturized with a natural shine to it, then no prep work is needed for your hair. However, many require the use of styling products before the wet set begins to help the curl out and provide extra moisture to the hair.
A moisturizing setting lotion or frizz smoothing product is often needed before setting the hair. These products help control frizz and add hold to the curl aiding in curl definition. A lot of these products provide extra moisture for the hair so your hair will be soft once styled. If you have thin hair or straight hair a small amount of setting lotion or smoothing product should suffice. If your hair has a frizzy or coarse texture then apply your product on each section of hair to help control frizz and smooth the hair.
Roller Wet Set
This is a very simple process that can be taught to young girls as well to get them used to doing their own hair. You should have plastic or satin wrapped sponge rollers for this. Sponge rollers without a satin wrap often catch stray hairs and break them when it is time to remove the roller. Any size roller can be used depending on the size curl you're looking to achieve. Regardless of the size roller you choose wet setting provides a tighter curl than dry setting. So if a loose curl is what you are seeking than wet setting using this method may not be best for your needs.
Taking one section at a time hold on to the end of the section with one hand. Using your other hand place the roller underneath the section starting at the ends. Using both hands hold your hair and the roller together and slowly roll them towards your scalp. Stop rolling about a half inch away from your scalp. Secure the roller in place. Repeat this for each section of hair you wish
