The differences between a Siberian Husky and an Alaskan Malamute may seem far and between. Sometimes, a few people may not even recognize the differences between these two very similar breeds. Why? Well, they can have the same coloring, same markings, same body shape and even down to the facial proportions and ears. They have come from the same family after all and are so very comparable in many aspects. If you're choosing one of these breeds, you have to make sure you're getting the exact dog you want.
One big difference is their size and stature. Siberian Malamutes are somewhat larger and can even have a slightly more bulky and muscular frame than their Alaskan counterparts. This is because they were first used for centuries to pull heavy loaded sleds to give goods to villages in Siberia. They also have longer legs due to their larger stance and height. Another thing that can only be noticed is their different types of fur and undercoats.
The Malamute has thick and very coarse hair, and can even be considered wooly. Their tail is also very bushy, and their undercoat is where most of the thickness surrounding their lean body is found. Their undercoat is usually grey in color, if not its white with their coloring brown and white. The Husky's fur is much more soft and lush to the touch. Their fur can be easily groomed and is known to get quite silky after a nice bath.
These two dogs can also have different facial markings. The Alaskan Husky has much more designed patterns surrounding its face. Two long lines of black or brown around the cheeks and maybe even a somewhat circle like shape around the forehead. Malamutes may also have some type of design, but they are more known for the two divided fur colors around their face and body, one half black or brown, or black and white.
Their tails can also be something of note. The Malamute has a higher set tail and sticks up frequently, while Huskies love to wag their tails and even have a more spiral shape to it. A Malamute's ears are higher set and point up more as opposed to the Husky's smaller slightly more rounded ears. Huskies have more agility since their body is smaller and are best for smaller sled pulling, so if you ever see a bunch of Malamute or Husky like dogs pulling different kind of sleds, remember Malamutes are for the heavy lifting.
These dogs have quite a similar temperament, except the Husky seems to be more playful while the Malamute likes to laze around a bit at times. Yes, it can be hard to tell the difference, just use your eyes wisely!
