Tips for making a move easier

The saying that time is money is never more true than when you are moving. Often times people have very short times spans to get a lot done when they are moving within because you are renting equipment, responsible for moving out on certain dates, and have recruited help for this short period of time. This makes it crucial that you have a plan of attack that is effective and have a backup plan just in case the worst happens.

1.) Do as much as you possible can beforehand. Get boxes and pack everything you do not absolutely need. Pack up all storage areas weeks in advance. Always give yourself a lot of time to get each room done and make it a priority to label all boxes. Although it is tempting to wait until your help arrives to pack and to tell yourself that there isn't that much left do it, fight this temptation. There will always be many things that you don't plan that will creep into your schedule (son to emergency dental appointment, not enough space in rental truck, traffic).

2.) Always plan meals ahead of time. This is especially crucial if you have people helping you out. These people have just invested time and energy into getting your stuff packed up or at least partially packed up. The last thing you should do is to send them home to plan meals or force them have to go out for fast food. This is also a huge time waster! Make up a big subway sandwich and get a ton of chips, even if you take a break for thirty minutes at least you are prepared to get straight back to work.(This is cheap and easily done the night before). This cuts down on the waiting time. This also is a great way of acknowledging that you appreciate your help and you know they are making a sacrifice for you.

3.) If possible arrange for a babysitter, preferably away from the site of the move. This is especially true for children that are under 10. While yes children can be a big help you need to think of the big picture. Would it be more productive for one person to be designated to entertaining children than for many people to be distracted and slowed down by them? This also will add to your peace of mind when heavy articles of furniture are being loaded especially because the front door usually has to remain open. It will give you peace of mind if nothing else.
