Have you seen the "As Seen on TV" Green Bags by Debbie Meyer? Have you wondered if they really worked and were worth the price?
What are the Debbie Meyer Green Bags?
The Debbie Meyer Green Bags are storage bags intended to help fruits and vegetables stay fresh longer. The Green Bags appear to be sturdy, green but translucent plastic bags. A 20 pack contains ten large (17" x 12") and 10 medium (15" x 9") bags and usually costs $9.99.
How do the Debbie Meyer Green Bags work to keep produce fresh?
Simply put inside your fresh produce and fold over the bag. The Green Bags are created with Oya, a natural mineral that absorbs and removes damaging ethylene gases that cause deterioration.
The packaging shows comparison photos between fresh fruits and vegetables stored with and without Debbie Meyer Green Bags. The photos show bananas fresh after 9 days, tomatoes fresh after 14 days, strawberries fresh after 9 days, lettuce fresh after 21 days and broccoli fresh after 21 days.
Our experiences and results with Debbie Meyer Green Bags:
We've tested the Debbie Meyer Green Bags in our home for several months. We are trying to buy locally grown or organic fruits and vegetables. When we pay premium prices for our produce, I don't want any of it to go to waste.
Other than bananas which we use in our homemade smoothies, most of our fresh fruit is easily and happily consumed before it could possibly go bad but here's what we've noticed as we've Debbie Meyer Green Bags to prolong the life of fruit when we've been traveling.
Bananas can easily be kept fresh in Debbie Meyer Green Bags for up to 9 days. We've also kept strawberries for up to 7 days, not quite as long as the 9 days the package claimed but much better than the four days or less we've kept strawberries fresh without the Debbie Meyer Green Bags. Grapes stay firmer and crunchier for up to 10 days.
One of my favorite uses for the Debbie Meyer Green Bags is for green or purple cabbage. My husband and I love coleslaw but my kids won't touch it. Since nobody wants to eat week old coleslaw, I only make it in small batches. That often leaves me with a half a head of cabbage and no desire to make it again for at least a week. I've kept cabbage fresh in a Debbie Meyer Green Bags for up to 15 days. We've also had success keeping squash, cucumber and zuchini fresh longer, never resulting in those soft, mushy spots.
Tomatoes go so quickly in our home that we've never tested those. Friends have reported that the Debbie Meyer Green Bags also keep potatoes and onions for sprouting for weeks.
Debbie Myer Green Bags can also be used to keep fresh flower arrangements fresh longer. Housewares America, Inc. also offers Debbie Meyer Cheese Bags, Debbie Meyer Cold Cut Bags and Debbie Meyer Bread Bags.
Tips for Using Debbie Meyer Green Bags:
Make sure the produce is fresh and dry when you place it in the bags. Simply fold the bags, don't attempt to tie them or use twist ties. If condensation builds up in the bag, simply wipe dry with a paper towel. The bags are reusable which makes them really green but only store the same thing in each bag, for example only onions or only bananas.
Our Debbie Meyer Green Bags Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
First of all we love that Debbie Myer Green Bags are made in the U.S.A. but the real reason we buy them is that they do work to keep your fresh fruit and vegetables fresh longer which means we waste less and replace less. Debbie Meyer Green Bags don't perform miracles but they are really helpful.
