Poetry: Leaving

by V. Z. Marcus

Created on: September 24, 2009   Last Updated: September 30, 2009

I walked towards the road
one evening night-
in the back,
and by the lights.

There I saw those few
and full of life,
take what they could
and leave with pride.

Men with tears
in their eyes
who looked back,
and saw their wives-

A dim, faded bloom
in soft despair.
How the glow has all
but disappeared.

The hour grew late
as I saw them last,
with dark hollowed
faces like dirty glass

The train took deep
and heaving turns.
It left the mountain
and never returned
