Tips for fishing for salmon

Listed below are some really helpful strategies for fishing for salmon. I have been ocean fishing for salmon on the west coast of BC for about 15 years and I have learned some VERY valuable tips which has been proven to catch lots of salmon. The first thing that you have to know is which type of salmon you wish to fish for - yes, there are different types of Salmon out there. In my experience, the most sought out types of salmon, by the west coast sport fishermen, are Coho and Spring (also referred to as Chinook, King, or Tyee). Lets look at the different methods for fishing in the west coast for these salmon.

To start with, you have to be familiar with the terminology of fishing, otherwise you will not be able to understand any fishermen when they talk to you. The next thing you should know is that you will NOT get any salmon from the ocean without a boat, a net, and the proper gear. Of course, the proper gear is expensive and needs to be of the best quality, otherwise your gear will break and/or fail when you are reeling in the catch of your life. The following is a list of the gear that you must have in order to start fishing in the ocean for practically any type of fish and a list of techniques used to fish in the west coast (for salmon, halibut, tuna, shark, etc.)

Fishing Rod: For salmon fishing, you will need a 10' 6" rod, should be no smaller than 10' and should be no bigger than 11'. Next, your rod should have 10 or 11 rings on it to ensure that you have the proper play with your fish and that you do not break your rod when you are fighting a 50 lbs fish. Also, make sure that you get a salt water rod, this is very important.

Reel: Your reel is, well, your fishing reel. Make sure that it is a salt water salmon reel or you will regret it after your first use. These reels can range from $100 to easily over $600. It is up to you how much you spend on your reel, but remember that if you are planning on doing lots of fishing that you should probably buy something that is reliable and comfortable to use.

Down-rigger: This is the most important gear on your boat, besides your rod and reel. Your Down-rigger is the piece of equipment that will lower your bait to a specific depth - as if you just put a slip weight onto your line and lower it, your line will just skim across the surface of the water because the currents are big in the ocean. With a downrigger, you should be using a 10 - 15 lbs. cannonball to drop your line. You bolt your down-rigger to the boat
