On a rainy day in Austin, the first thing to do with your kids in light of this summer's drought (among the worst in recorded history) is to turn their attention out the windows and have them marvel in and appreciate the rain. Thank the Heavens it has finally returned!
OK, that's done. Now consider what to fill your day with. I have assembled below a top ten list that is sure to get you through any rainy day blues. Or perhaps your children are like mine, and prolonged periods inside your house causes something most closely akin to a volcanic reaction to rise up from within them, until they boil over and begin furiously burning the house down with pent up energy and aggression. Getting them out is as much about self preservation as anything else.
It is comforting to know that Austin's vibrant and youthful culture, combined with its rich history and passion for education and learning, will not disappoint. Do a quick search on top kid-friendly cities and ideal places to raise kiddos, and the greater Austin MSA will be in the mix I'll bet. So without further adieu, and in no particular order, see if one of these activities suits your fancy:
1. Bounce the energy out of the little rascals Inflatable Wonderland
Located in the Lakeline Mall in Northwest Austin, this place is a lifesaver for the parent of particularly spirited toddlers. For around ten bucks, your kids have unlimited access to a plethora of large, inflated, colorful bouncy things, indoors and protected from rainy skies. And even better, there is ample seating for Mom and Dad. What could be better? The 'inflatables' are massive jumpers, bouncers, obstacles, slides, and all manner of gizmos. You wear matching wristbands and the entry/exit is staffed and guarded, so your kids can frolic and bounce and kick and jump themselves in to a sweaty, exhausted frenzy. Just in time to pass out on the car ride home. (www.inflatablewonderland.com)
2. Tour the State Capitol Building
The remarkable and looming architecture of the Capitol building will inspire Mom and Dad and awe the children. A massive, sprawling structure and widely recognized as one of the nation's most distinguished capitol buildings, it doubles as a National Historic Landmark. You and your kids will discover that everything really is bigger in Texas, as the State Capital is indeed the largest in gross square footage of all state capitols. (www.tspb.state.tx.us)
3. Catch a matinee at the Alamo Drafthouse
