I have been buying products online since the first days of the Netscape Navigator. The Internet has changed since those early days . Shopping online has become one of the ways that companies now sell their products and as a consumer there are several things you can do to make your experience safer and more enjoyable.
Trusted Sites
As a consumer you should only shop on sites you know you can trust. This would include places such as Amazon and EBay as examples. If the brand is trusted then you should have a pleasant shopping experience. If you really want to shop with an unknown company you should look for several tings on their site. The first thing is that the site should have easy to access contact information just a telephone number, Email and a physical address located on their site. If you send an Email you should get a response within a few days with your questions answered fully. Proper contact information is essential for your safety, if the site doesn't have it don't shop there.
Prices
Since there is a lot of competition in the online marketplace you will need to shop for the best price. Just remember you might not get the best price online due to the shipping costs so you should always factor that in. If you live in a small town without access to a wide selection of products then the shipping costs won't matter as much to you if you need to drive 200 miles to the nearest mall. Comparison shop before you buy and try auctions too you can often get brand new items for a few pennies just watch for inflated shipping prices.
Payment
Most Internet companies take payment with credit cards. In all my online shopping experiences I have never had a problem with my credit card online. If you are uncomfortable paying with your credit card look for companies that accept online payments such as PayPal or take Money Orders. You really don't have much choice when it comes to payment you will probably need a credit card. When you do use your card use a trusted secure site. Credit card fraud does occur and it is a risk paying online but you face risks anytime you give put your personal information.
Shipping
Most companies are very quick to ship items to you. Look for shipping methods that include a way for you to track your items through the post office or third parties such as United Parcel Service. Tracking your items gives you a level of protection and piece of mind. If you find your item hasn't shipped with a few days, contact the company and find out why it hasn't shipped. You should complain if you find that it is taking too long because you would do the same for bad service in a mall. Online retailers want your business and the good ones will correct any problems immediately for you. Be sure you know the returns policy too for any purchase you want to make.
Once You get Your Items
Once your goods arrive check the invoice to make sure everything matches what you paid for and check your credit card statements too. You should always do this to make sure you haven't been handed some hidden charge. Check with the company if you feel the invoice doesn't match what you paid and clear up the problem.
Conclusion
Shopping online can be fun with all the thousands of products out there. Use trusted sites and be sure sites you are not sure of provide contact information. Compare online prices to those in your local store and enjoy your online shopping experiences.
