'Tis the hour before full dark,
When the day comes near its close,
And the starlings chase the insects
Through a sky of deeper blue and rose.
The evening shadows lengthen,
As the sun hides its happy face
Below the darkening horizon,
And my melancholy grows apace.
For you're not here to cheer me,
As before when our love did reign;
The twilight brings only longing,
For your hand to be in mine again.
Though the stars soon begin to wink,
And the moon sends down its pale light,
Within my heart there is no spark,
Only anticipation of a lonely night.
But as I reflect on times long past-
Of twilights that we spent together,
My heart remains not long downcast,
My spirit becomes as light as a feather.
For remembrance of that twilight time,
When you were but sixteen,
Returns the joy to my soul,
For I was your king and you were my queen.
