In 1992 the body of a woman was found in a field, off a dirt road at the edge of the county line. The body was so decomposed that all they could tell for sure was that it was a woman and that she had had red hair. It was estimated that the body had been there about two years. This news was quite shocking for such a rural area. The television broadcast it, people talked about it in the coffee shops and then,...there was nothing. It was an unsolved murder, with a Jane Doe thrown out in an area where there was nothing but cactus, coyotes and cows. But she was not a Jane Doe, somebody knew her, somebody loved her. Somewhere she had parents, perhaps a husband and children. She was somebody, she had dreams and hopes, she had a name. She did not just get up and leave her life, someone took her life. Are her children out there somewhere wondering why their mother disappeared?
A couple of years, prior to the body being found, there was a man from the city, who at the time freguented the rural county. His bussiness had to do with oil leases in the area. The story was that he was married but was seeing another woman and wanted a divorce so he could be with her full time. His wife did not want a divorce. She did not want another woman coming in, taking over her husband, her home, her things, her life. She would not leave. Her husband put her clothing out in a storage building and told the children that she had left. Soon he disposed of the clothing, by giving it away. She was a size 6 or 8 and she was a red head. One of the items of clothing was a beautiful off white rabbit coat. The man proceeded to remodel his home in the city for its soon to be new occupant.
Most of the clothing was too small. The only thing that fit was the rabbit coat. It was worn for some time until it was given away to a young girl who had admired it. That was many years ago. Time passes and people forget, sometimes they don't see what is right before their eyes. Perhaps it was just a coincidence. The questions go unanswered..did the woman leave on her own? Was that her rabbit coat? The answers perhaps lie in a grave marked Jane Doe.
