Steam Powered Combat, Play like you've got a pair!

Yes, this is a game created by Privateer Press. This is a miniature models war game. The premise of this game is similar to that of other war games, however much different at the same time. When it comes to war games, most people have heard of Warhammer and Warhammer 40K. When looked at from a far, these games can look very time consuming and confusing, however after a few smaller games, the hobby becomes a lot of fun and can be very rewarding.

This first thing to note is that this is a hobby. It is not like Risk or Monopoly where you can buy the box and play. This game does take a little more work but as said, the work tends to pay off. As stated above, this is a miniatures war game. All of the models need to be painted and assembled. The assembly is not overly difficult on most models however the painting can be as time consuming as you want. In all actuality, a lot of war game enthusiasts will just paint and not even play. It really comes down to preference. So what is needed to start is two armies, which I will touch on in a moment, some dice, some counters of some sort, pennies work well, a ruler or tape measure and a 4ft by 4ft board (board size can vary, this size generally works best for smaller games). This is of course after assembling the models. Also a set of the Warmachine rules is helpful. Quick start rules come in the various army starter boxes or online at the official privateer press website, which is of course, www.privateerpress.com.

Now model assembly does require a bit of work. Once you have done it a few times, it becomes increasingly less difficult. What is needed is some metal to metal glue, a modeling or exacto knife, a metal nail file and the newly acquired models of course. First thing that you should do is to clean the models of extra metal. This is done with the modeling knife and the metal nail file. Try to get the models smooth as that will also make the assembly much easier. After the cleaning, just glue said pieces together. Gluing time will vary depending on the glue. Privateer Press also sells paint, glue and tools although most hobby stores carry adequate equipment.

After the models are assembled, the battle can begin. The box sets are a great start. Basically there are five basic armies. Khador, Cygnar, Menoth, Cryx and Mercenaries. I do recommend researching the armies a bit as different armies cater to different playing styles. If you have never played a miniatures war game,
