My college career is different from most, in that I waited for twenty years after I graduated from high school, to decide to go. I had wanted to attend college when I finished high school in 1959, but knowing that my family was not able, financially, I knew there was no way that I could go, so I opted for getting a job as soon as I graduated from high school. I went to work, was making my own money, and was able to spend it on whatever I wanted, so I was happy and content and forgot all about my hopes for college.
I continued to work for four years, working at three different jobs during that time. The last job I had was a good paying job for those days. I was working, living at home, and enjoying my life.
In 1963 I met a wonderful man. We dated for a couple of months and then one day he asked me to marry him. I said yes, and in October of 1963 we repeated our vows and moved into our first little home. I was happy and content for the first year, but I was getting ready to start our family. Little did I know that it was not to be that easy. We were married for five years, trying very hard to have a baby, before we had our first child, a little boy. Now, I felt that my life was complete. I loved this little bundle of joy with all my heart. I put all my efforts into loving and caring for him, and we spent long days together while my husband was working.
When our son was about two years old, I began to want another baby. My child had grown up, he was not a baby anymore. We tried for months to get pregnant, but it just did not happen. We started keeping foster children, and we got a little baby girl, that had been mistreated. We were finally able to adopt this beautiful little girl. When she began to get a little older, I wanted another baby girl of my own, but we had given up on another one. After all, it had been about 5 years. But one day, a miracle happened. I found out that I was pregnant, and I was so, so happy. We had our second little girl, who was also a beautiful baby.
When my two girls were about five and seven years old, a friend told me about a college located several miles away from us, that was to start giving college classes in a nearby town. She said she was going to go, and wanted me to go with her. I knew that was going to be my next challenge. I discussed it with my husband, who was not very excited about it, at first. I thought that I just had to go,so I shared with him my dream, and he finally relented. I applied for a grant, was able to
