Believing in ghosts is largely subjective based on a piece or partial snapshot of one's entire belief system. Faith, religion, spirituality and feelings about subjects like life after death and reincarnation play a role in how each person views their own existence. How we view human existence is essential to our perceptions when it comes to believing in ghosts. For instance I have found that agnostic people rarely believe in ghosts since they tend to discount any type of alternate form of life or higher existence beyond the human realm.
While I cannot prove with any scientific certainty that ghosts exist, seeing as experts themselves are hard pressed to establish proof without question, I can share my philosophies which reinforce in my mind that ghosts do in fact exist and can often commingle with mortals. I've heard it said that animals and small children have the greatest ability to see the energy of ghosts. Adults tend to become blind to ghostly energies as they begin developing their own conscious frame of mind. As our egos emerge it further limits our ability to see beyond the human realm unless the entities disturbance is abrupt or blatant such as the antagonistic acts of a poltergeist. Mediums will often advise skeptical adults to pay close attention to children under the age of five that claim to have an invisible friend accompanying them especially if a close loved one has recently passed away.
On a technical note for clarification purposes as it relates to this topic I think there are people who tend to confuse the term ghost with the definition of spirit when the two are entirely different. Spirit is defined as the energy our souls take on after we've been released from our human forms thus becoming lighter in energy as we cross over whereas ghosts are a separate form of energy that exists in its own plain between human and spirit. Ghosts are like transients stuck between the two worlds yet not truly a part of either. Ghost energy hasn't graduated from one form to the other as it avoided taking the final step on its journey home.
The presence of both ghost and spirit exist, however believing in ghosts is not the same as believing in spirit or life after death. Ghosts are still connected to the earth plain by their failure to acknowledge or accept the spirit plain. Mediums and psychics tend to believe that ghost's energy is formed as a result of tragedy or conflict rather than a normal passing. Ghosts cannot resolve or except their passing so they
