The Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum isn't the biggest museum in Oklahoma and it would be a stretch to say it is the absolute museum in the Sooner State. However, it is a must-see for anyone who loves history and enjoys visiting museums that are loved by those who work there. It is certainly a jewel among the many museums in Green County Oklahoma.
The exhibits are well organized and quite informative. Not only do you learn about Pawnee Bill and his Wild West Show, but you will also learn about how he helped form the complex history of Oklahoma. Old photographs, posters and other advertisements to his show are seen everywhere.
The barn is quite interesting as well. There you will see all sorts of "vehicles" of his day. The wagons, buckboards and the like are well-maintained. It is easy to imagine a pioneer racing across Oklahoma during the five different land runs that opened Oklahoma to white settlement.
The blacksmith shop is a walk back through time. Several different tools are on display and, surprisingly, dust-free despite being outside. It is easy to see how folks of that time period used those tools during their everyday lives.
Driving through the pasture of the ranch was a thrill. Along with draft horses and cattle, there were several buffalo. Depending on the time of year you visit, you may be able to see baby buffalo nursing from their mothers. You can see in the eyes of the buffalo what a close knit herd they are, especially the mothers and their calves.
The Pawnee Bill Mansion is beautiful. The Tiffany lamps and exotic rugs are gorgeous. You can feel the love for this mansion from the tour guide who explains everything is an informative and funny way. She carefully adds funny stories that can't be read in a history book or even the Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum brochure.
Be careful while in the mansion. There is no telling what you may or may not see while there. We had quite an adventure as we walked through the home, making us wonder what remnants of days gone by were still living withing the walls.
The staff is what makes this museum so great. After visiting hundreds of museums, never has the love for a place been so evident. It isn't a job to them. They genuinely love the museum and do all they can to make sure it is well cared for and respected. Quick to answer questions and explain a bit more of the the history, the staff is helpful without being pushy.
The Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum in Pawnee, Oklahoma is a must for every visitor to Oklahoma. Learn the history of the man and his mission and feel of the love within the museum.
