LAVENDAR BATH: Studies have shown that the scent and contact of lavendar oil has an impact on our psyche to the effect of immediate relaxation. Mix this relaxing scent with a hot bath, designed to ease the tension and stress out of our hyperactive muscles, and you have a med-free fix to sleeping. Soak in as hot a tub as you can with about 10 drops of lavendar essential oil, or lavendar bubble bath.
QUI GONG, T'AI CHI, or YOGA: These three techniques are all designed to combine movement with breath, an action that relaxes both the body and the mind. By stretching or moving the body in conjunction with our breathing, we are able to remove negative thoughts from our minds and focus on a more involved meditation. In addition, YOGA offers some stretching of the muscles, allowing our tense bodies to relax hopefully just enough to drift away.
READ: At night, when my mind is racing, I find if I can focus on reading a few pages, it relaxes me enough to make me sleepy.
WHITE NOISE: A fan, humidifier, Air Conditioner, or Air Purifier works wonders for this. If your like me, and any creak or crick can send you jolting out of bed, some kind of pleasant, monotonous, calming background noise can be enough to soothe the savage beast. I personally choose a floor fan pointed away from my bed. It uses little electricity and drowns out the peskier sounds.
