One of the most important things that you can have as a professional is a good knack for time management. There is so much that has to get done in a day, and you can't claim that you don't have enough time. Business isn't run on excuses, it is run on action, and getting the work done on time. It might be stressful, but it is the way that business is, and you have to be on your game if you are going to be a success in the business world. Here is how you can introduce a little time management into your day.
The first thing that you can do to introduce time management into your day is to start carrying around a day planner. Whether it actually is a day planner, or is some electronic device isn't a big deal. Having a day planner might not be something that makes your day any easier, but it can establish some patterns in your day, and can help you figure out where your busy times, and your slow times are. Sort of like making a budget helps show you where your money is, a planner can help you see where your time is going.
Once you figure out where you have time in your day, and where you don't have time in your day, you can start to adjust how you plan your days. If you realize that Monday is a lot busier than Friday, you can maybe spend a little bit of time Friday getting ready for Monday. Maybe you get more work done around the house over the weekend so you don't have to do it after a busy day Monday. Getting those reports ready, or the presentation done on Friday can go a long way to having an easier Monday.
This can also help you figure out when you can go to lunch, and actually get out of the office for a few minutes. I see so many people running around all day fretting that they might not have time to eat, or take a break. Trust me, there is always time for yourself, and even if it is just a few minutes, there is time if you just are willing to take it. Taking a few minutes everyday for yourself can clear your mind, and make your job seem just a little less stressful.
Figuring out where you have time in your day will help you get more of your work done. It can help you figure out where you have to multi-task, and you can figure out how exactly that will happen. Whether that means you are going to e-mail a presentation, or have a conference on the phone as opposed to at the office, you will know what the best move is based on where you are going to have time to do so.
Introducing time management isn't a hard thing to do. Time is like money in that you only have so much of it, and we all spend so much time thinking of ways to make it last longer. Plan out your day, and figure out where you have peaks and valleys. Learn how to combine tasks, and prioritize, and you will soon be on the path to time management success.
