Urinary Tract Infections, also referred to as cystitis, or bladder infections are typically caused by some type of bacteria. Nearly 85% of UTIs are caused by the
E Coli bacteria which is a normal bacteria of the intestines. E Coli can easily enter the vagina by fecal contamination. Because of the close approximity of the anus to the vagina, women are much more susceptible than men to urinary tract infections. Other contributing factors may be sexual intercourse, pregnancy, or the use of a diaphragm.
Prevention and remedies for urinary infections include the following:
-Drink quality cranberry juice. The juice of cranberry produces hippuric acid in the urine which acidifies the urine and inhibits bacterial growth. Cranberry also prevents the bacteria from adhering to the lining of the bladder. Be sure to use pure, unsweetened cranberry juice for the best results. Commercial juices contain only 30% of the actual cranberry and are less effective as a result. Cranberry capsules can also be substituted.
-Goldenseal is a herb which can be purchased in capsule form. It has a natural antimicrobial agent(do not take if pregnant or for more than a week straight)
-Drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria
-Avoid citrus fruits as they produce alkaline urine that encourages bacterial growth
-Stay away from caffeine, chocolate, carbonated drinks and refined or processed foods.
-Take a probiotic (like acidolphilus) daily to repopulate the beneficial bacteria in the bladder
-Do not delay urinating when you have the sensation
-Keep genital area clean and dry. Avoid staying in wet bathing suits.
-Use sanitary pads instead of tampons
Often, with the above measures, a UTI can be stopped in its tracks. However, if symptoms persist, it would be necessary to see a physician and begin a course of antibiotics. Be careful about resorting to antibiotics too often, however, because they do disturb the natural balance of the internal flora and can actually cause and promote future infections.
