Like their human owners, many dogs are prone to getting cancer. Types of cancer that are prevalent in dogs include lymphosarcoma (cancer of lymphocytes and lymphoid tissues), mammary cancer, osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and anal sac adenocarcinoma (cancer of the anal glands). Golden retrievers in particular are notorious for passing on early due to cancer.
Cancer begins when cells in a body start to grow out of control and causes damage to the DNA leading to death of the cell. Causes of cancer include carcinogens, age, genetic makeup, a compromised immune system and disease. Just like humans, the everyday environment that a dog lives in can contribute to development of cancer. While there is no cure for cancer, there are many preventative methods that can help your dog live longer and avoid the fatality of cancer.
Studies show that mammary tumors are prevalent in female dogs that have not been spayed and testicular cancer has a higher chance of developing in unneutered dogs (obviously!). Spaying or neutering your dog is not only a responsible thing to do; it also helps prevent growths in their sexual organs further down the road.
Diet plays a vital role in ensuring optimal health and building a robust immune system. Many dog foods are made up of questionable ingredients such as animal-by-product, poultry fat and split grains. Allergens and genetically modified crops such as corn and wheat are also often used. These ingredients often contain high levels of toxin and carcinogens. High quality dog food with no artificial preservatives and additives is your best bet for safekeeping your dog's health. Dogs should eat high protein diets with minimal carbohydrates - high quality kibble ensures that your dog's food is free from poisonous elements like fluoride, melamine and hormones. Kibbles made up of free-range meat and organic vegetables can help avoid these problems.
In addition to a good diet, dietary supplements can also help prevent cancer. Shredded, unsweetened coconut is said to provide fiber and help prevent colon cancer while fish oil and supplements high in Vitamin C and E provide antioxidant properties that help fight free radicals that may cause cancer. Adding yogurt, pumpkin or coconut oil to your dog's diet can provide the extra vitamins and minerals he needs to develop a healthy immune system.
Vaccinations, immunosuppresants and antibiotics are often touted as a must-have for every dog and an annual vaccination is often recommended for all dogs. However,
