As a girl gamer, I often find myself immersed in the slim-pickins world of male-dominated RPG's (Role-playing games). There are few RPG's that contain a female protaganist, and those that do, often fail to meet the same standards as the RPG's that offer a male protagonist. Of course, we all know Lara Croft of Tomb Raider makes the grade, and even Aeon Flux (featuring the voice of Charlize Theron, star of the feature film Aeon Flux) is climbing the female RPG charts, but what is a girl gamer to do when the new games staggering into the world are either difficult and confusing to play (e.g. Valkyrie Profile II, which features a female protaganist with stunningly irregular game controls and mind-numbing stop scenes), or are great RPG's but feature a difficult-to-sympathize-with male protaganist (like God of War, a terrific game overall except for the misogynistic protaganist and the preponderance of bare breasts)? Phew...what a sentence. But, it gets the point across. There are simply not enough good girl games in the world.
So, for the girl gamers out there, I offer you this mini-list of games that might interest you. Hopefully, you can find a fun, puzzle-filled, grrl-powered game that meets your RPG needs without playing up the fluff of most girl games out there. Here are my top picks:
MMORPG: City of Villains / City of Heroes for the PC/MAC. In this game, you design your own villain or hero and build that character up through various challenges presented by the game. You can build a female villain or superhero of any size, shape, color, superpower, or fame you desire and the character will be no more and no less powerful than a male counterpart in the game starting off with the same characteristics. In addition, the beauty of this game is, being an MMORPG, you can make actual/virtual friends with other game players in the online-i-verse. Just make sure you have a decent video card on your computer because this game has some serious graphics.
MMORPG: Disney's Toontown for PC. Okay, okay. It's silly, I know. You play a cartoon that you design (and other than names, it's generally hard to distinguish boy toons from girl toons) and you build your character up by defeating Corporate Cogs with your bag of gags (because Corporate Cogs can't take a joke, we all know). It may be a little silly, but it certainly presents some family-fun-oriented challenges and it can be very addictive, so watch out. You might find yourself craving some of those banana cream pies if you
