What Did You Do Last Summer?

Raymond Green fidgeted in his chair on the first of school as he pondered the teacher's writing assignment. Miss Belenski had asked each student to write about what they had done that summer.

The year before Raymond had the same writing assignment in his old school and something terrible had happened. He had written about a trip to Disney Land he and his family had taken. The teacher then made corrections and handed back each person's paper.

But Raymond's grammar, spelling, and punctuation was so bad that he had made an unbelievable number of mistakes. Because of this, his previous teacher, Mrs. Percy, decided to run off copies of his story and have the rest of the students correct his mistakes as a writing assignment. The experience was very devastating to Raymond because of the reaction of his friends.

Raymond had three days to turn in his assignment so every night he wrote diligently on his paper.

"Hey Ray, you want to play some catch?" asked his brother Jerome as he tossed a football in the air.

"Nah, I've got to get this paper done," he responded.

Later that night Raymond's mother came to his room thinking something was wrong.

"Raymond, I've called you to supper three times already. Are you sick, dear?"

"No Mom, I've just got to get this paper finished," he went back to his writing.

"Well, we went ahead and started without you," his mother informed him. "When you get to a good place, come out and join us for supper, okay?"

"Huh? Oh yeah, I'll be out in just a little bit," he assured her.

But a couple hours later as his mother went to check on him and bring his plate of food that she had just warmed up, Raymond was still writing. And a short
