The disciples were amazed at what they had just experienced. They knew Jesus was great, but how could he feed so many people with five loaves and two fish and have so much food left over?
Jesus who was still mourning the death of his cousin John wanted some quiet time with the Father, so He told the disciples to go ahead of Him on the other side by boat. Jesus dismissed the crowd then went into the mountains to pray.
The disciples did as Jesus told them and set off by boat to the other side. They were still discussing what had just taken place. They had seen other miracles that Jesus did but this one was the greatest. As they sailed further out to sea the wind became stronger and the boat was being tossed from side to side. The wind got more violent the disciples became afraid and tried everything to steady the boat, but the wind was too strong.
Just when they thought they would perish a figure appeared to them walking on the water. The disciples were afraid and started screaming, thinking they were seeing a ghost. Jesus knowing what was on their mind and how afraid they were, spoke to them saying do not worry, don't be afraid it is me Jesus .
Peter always the first to speak, said if you are really Jesus then tell me to come out on the water. The disciples thought Peter was crazy; whoever heard of anyone walking on water? But Jesus who has authority over all things told Peter to step out of the boat. Being impulsive and exercising great faith, Peter stepped out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus. The winds continued howling and the waves crashed angrily against Peter's feet. He walked a little distance but got overwhelmed by the wind and the waves, so he started sinking. Peter immediately cried out to Jesus to save him. Jesus reached out His hands and grabbed Peter. He took him into the boat, but scolded him for doubting. As soon as they reached into the boat the winds died down and the waves became calm.
Many believe that this miracle should not to be taken literally. If this is a metaphor then so is the feeding of the five thousand and the other miracles that Jesus did. To believe these miracles were actual events is to believe that Jesus is God and is all powerful. However, whether you believe it to be true or not does not change the facts. These are real events, not stories passed down through generations.
Many of us wonder how Peter could do something so great like walking on water then the next minute he is sinking. These disciples were in awe of what Jesus had done the day before on the mountain. He fed more than five thousand people and even had food left over. You would think that walking on water would be a small feat for Jesus.
How many times have we seen God come through for us in great areas, and as the next small trouble arises we doubt His ability to help us? Like the disciples we are in awe for a minute but quickly lose sight of God's greatness. It is God's desire that we trust Him at all time and in all things. He fed more than five thousand people with a little boy's lunch, and He raised Lazarus from the dead. He commanded the wind to stand still and walked on water. Is there anything you will face that He cannot handle?
