How to prevent your dog from getting cancer

Sadly, nearly half of all dogs will die from cancer of some sort. In many cases, causes are unknown. Some cancers are more prevalent in some breeds than others. Still, there are some things you as a pet owner can do to prevent or minimize the chances your furry friend will succumb to this dreaded condition.

Diet

Perhaps the most important cancer prevention strategy for dogs is proper diet. Fresh foods of high quality are the healthiest meal options. A raw or prey-model diet is widely believed to lower a dog's cancer risk by closely mimicking a canine's natural diet. Dogs are meant to consume a diet high in meats, not grains. Commercial dog food usually contains far more grains than is necessary or healthy for dogs to consume. Feeding a raw diet requires some research, but it is not as difficult as one would tend to believe. There are numerous books, websites, and enthusiasts willing to teach others how to feed their pets the natural way. Some holistic veterinarians are also a good source when considering such a diet.

Not all prepared dog foods are unhealthy for dogs, but many are. Most commercially-prepared foods are loaded with low-quality meats, unnecessary fillers, grains, artificial colors, and carcinogenic preservatives and taste enhancers. Contrary to what the flashy television ads will lead you to believe, corn isn't healthy in dog food. The best commercial foods are not advertised on television and are not available at the grocery store or even the pet store. Some brands to consider are Taste of the Wild, Orijen, Timberwolf Organics, Canine Caviar, and Back to Basics. Most of these foods are available online or through special-order from your pet food supplier. When selecting a food, look for high-quality protein sources. There should be no grains within the first three or four ingredients if any is contained at all. No colors, preservatives, by-products, soy, or fillers should be used. A commercial diet is not ideal, but a high-quality commercial diet is far preferable to the average pet food.

Sadly, many mainstream veterinarians are not knowledgeable about proper nutrition for companion animals. "Vet Recommended" pet foods may be some of the worst nutritionally. Do your own research, and weigh your decisions carefully.

Exercise

Like people, dogs need regular exercise. Most pets today receive far less activity than they should. If living naturally, your dog would be on the move several hours each day. Emulate nature's plan by getting your dog out for
