Smiles

She felt alone and quite afraid,

Midst people in this far flung place,

They spoke a language very strange,

None had a smile upon their face.

She wished her mother hadn't left,

But off to work, she'd had to go,

The stern headmistress took her hand,

She longed for all she used to know.

They walked long corridors dimly lit,

Their footsteps clacking on the tiles,

When the doorway opened up ahead,

In a room with children's beaming smiles.

The world suddenly seemed all right,

She'd lost her terrible sense of dread,

The welcoming smiles awaiting her,

Made her happy to look ahead.
