Today, it is more common to see more overweight Americans. The young and the old are more overweight than 15 years ago. As the world becomes more global, many more opportunities, technological advancements and materials are available at a rapid speed, causing for instant gratification and no longer needing discipline.
We have more things to do, than 15 years ago, due to technological capabilities. So, we pack more activities into our day with the help of technology. We are having more sedentary lives. An example, a stay at home mother can fill her dishwasher and then run it, instead of standing there for about 30-60 minutes washing dishes from lunch. Washing dishes the old fashion way was exercise to many people.
At a more national and local level, physical education is no longer a requirement subject in middle and high schools; and many elementary schools have cut physical education from the school curricula. Chances are physical education classes were the major activities for many students. Once students come home, they may be tempted to sit and eat in front of the television. By distracting yourself, you are less likely to pay attention to what you are eating, causing you to eat more.
There are many restaurant that cater to all types of culinary for all people. You feel like eating pizza? Look through the phone book, oh yeah or the Internet, and see what kinds of pizza are available. You can even super size about a lot of fast food or restaurant items.
Also, junk food is cheaper than healthier food. Sometimes, it is easier to buy junk food due to economic hardships. Buying candy bars, instead of fruits or vegetables, can be cheaper in some parts of the US. Companies tend to base prices on regions.
We can start by moving more. Try to at least wash dishes once a week the old fashioned way. Walk 30 minutes a day. Exercise during television commercials. Next time, a sweet tooth kicks in, aim for a fruit.
Discipline yourself, don't give in to temptations all the time. A good website to look at is http://smallstep.gov/. We can reduce the over weight problem in this country, but it has start with you.
