People laugh at me constantly when I tell them, "The bigger the hook - the bigger the fish!" but that theory has never let me down.

A big fish is not as likely to waste energy chasing down a small fly as he is to attack a more substantial meal.

When fishing in a big lake I usually start with a minimum 3 inch spoon (I like to fish for Northern Pike) depending on the area of the lake and the target fish I usually select a hook that would appeal to the larger fish of that species.

I have a friend who caught a Walleye and as he brought it closer to the boat we were able to see the fish in the water. It was almost to the boat when a Northern Pike swam up and grabbed that Walleye broadside! We shouted which startled the Pike because it quickly let go and swam back down. The Walleye was landed and measured in at 18 inches! Makes one wonder just how large that Northern Pike was!
